Totally forgot to post this! I made a new dress and matching headbow and wore them to a meetup a little while ago. I’ll have to get some better pictures of the details on the dress, I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Maybe you’ve heard— the Japanese subculture of Lolita has landed in New York, following the opening of its first Lolita themed shop, Tokyo Rebel. This following the opening of Maid Cafe, a Japanese cafe where the staff are dressed in Lolita-esque maid outfits.
If you’re unfamiliar with the aesthetic— think prairies, bonnets, bows, frills, ruffles, cupcakes, and lots of pink, mixed with a teaspoon of mall goth. It’s as sugary and girly as you can get, in a completely un-ironic way. Named after that Lolita, it’s been around since the late 80s in Japan and started making its way here in the early 2000s. Lately it seems to be showing up more and more in pop culture and fashion, including some pretty high profile collections (see Chanel’s Cruise 2013 collection)
Since it seems it’ll be no time before Lolita has totally infiltrated the mainstream, you may as well get your jollies now and stock up on some items that will give you a toothache.
Uhhh so a couple of things. Tokyo Rebel has actually been open for a few years, there was a retail location in NYC a few years ago, they went entirely online for a few years, and this is actually a reopening in a different location. Maid Cafes, while delightful, have nothing to do with lolita fashion. The fashion has nothing to do with the book in any way shape or form, the name is a coincidence. And I would say maybe one of the clothing pieces you posted would be appropriate with lolita, everything else is not related.
Please do your research before you misrepresent a subculture. Maybe including some pieces from the actual lolita brands that Tokyo Rebel carries would be more appropriate.
My wife Holly built a full body costume of Blathers, then went around Comic-Con giving fossils to people (includes some familiar faces). I filmed the entire thing and it was adorable. Holly’s been working really hard on her YouTube channel and it makes me super proud to be seeing her do so! Share this one around guys :)
I love the Lady Nightwing doing the Villager pose A+
And I’m pretty sure that was a Luci cosplay on that panel at the end unless some blonde lady was just wearing an all-white suit and tie outfit lol
